Feelings flooding in

I feel guilty. Overwhelmingly, frustratingly guilty. So much so I am deeply saddened by my own emotions and spinning in a helpless, almost depressive, haze. I can’t sit still. I’m easily brought to tears and I couldn’t handle watching another TV news bulletin.

The logical and rational part of me knows I have nothing to feel guilty about. In fact, if I was to experience any powerful emotions, it should be awe-inspiring thankfulness. And I do. Why? Because not one of my family members or friends was directly affected by the floods: my parents, sister, grandmother or any member of my wife’s family. Not in Rockhampton, the Lockyer Valley, Brisbane or Inglewood.

I have offered my services through Volunteering Queensland to help wherever I can. My daughter and I cooked several cakes and goodies and delivered them to workers cleaning up around the place. Through my mental health news service, News In Mind, I have collated and published a collection of resources regarding the psychological impacts of disasters and I’m currently attempting to muster a team of psychologists and social workers to provide voluntary counselling and therapy to affected people around the state. ..
